Tex Murphy Dictionary
In the Tex Murphy games, there is some terminology you probably should know, so I've decided to explain some key words/names here.
Eugenics - The science of improving the human race through the regulation of parenthood
Pandora - In Greek mythology, the first woman on Earth. Pandora was given a box by the Gods on Mount Olympus. She was told never to open it. In a similar manner to the forbidden fruit in the story of Adam and Eve, Pandora gave into curiosity and finally opened the box, which caused evil and disease to be released into the world. To "open Pandora's box" means to "explore the forbidden and pay the consequences."
Mutant - A living organism whose genetic code has been changed in some manner. Radiation (like the kind released from nuclear bombs) can potentially create these mutations (note: despite common belief not all mutations are bad and can actually lead to the evolution of a species).
Norm - Someone whose genetic code is "normal"
Speeder - A fictional vehicle of the future which is a personal flying device. Sometime in the 21st century they replaced cars.
The Maya - An ancient group of people who dominated Southern and Eastern Mexico as well as Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Honduras from approximately 500 BC to 900 AD. They were one of the most advanced cultures in the Americas in mathematics and astrology before the Europeans began arriving in the 15th century. The Mayan were the first known culture to represent zero with a symbol. It consisted of an oval with an arc inside it. The Mayan were also able to create a rather accurate calendar which had 365 days. Descendents of the Mayan still live in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.
The Anasazi - An early inhabitant of the south-western United States (primarily in what is now the states of Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah). The true name of the Anasazi is still not known, but in Navajo the word "Anasazi" means "ancient enemies."
Geiger - A fictional ravenous animal which resembles a lizard who stands on its hinds legs. It is possible that if geigers were a result of a genetic mutation caused from the nuclear bombs of World War III, the name "geiger" was chosen for the animal because of what is known as a "Geiger Counter" which is a machine used for measuring radiation.
