I want to run Overseer in Windows XP. Is this possible?:
Here's a method I was sent to get Overseer to run on WinXP. I haven't tested it, so I can't guarantee it will work. Here are the steps:
1. Insert Overseer disc 1 into CD-ROM drive. Ignore autoplay and click out of it.
2. Double-click on 'My Computer' and then right-click on the Overseer disc and select 'Open'.
3. Right-click on 'setup.exe' and select 'Properties'.
4. Left-click on the 'compatibility' tab and in the section 'compatibility mode' click the box to select 'run this program in compatibility mode for'.
5. Next click the arrow below this line to select the version of Windows that you knew previously worked with Overseer (e.g Windows 98 / Windows ME).
6. Now left-click 'Apply' and then 'OK'.
Now run the Overseer.exe and enjoy.
I want full screen video for the DVD version of Overseer. Is there anything I can do?:
Yes, as a matter of fact, there is! Go to your Overseer directory (Default is C:\Overseer) and open the file "Tex.ini". Go under the section with the heading "[VIDEO]". Under here should be "MCIAREA" Change the numbers beside it to the following (in order!): 0 0 640 480. For those wondering, the first two numbers represent the positioning of the top left corner of the video and the other two represent the resolution. Don't worry if you're playing on 800x600 resolution, those are still the numbers you should put in. Now, depending on your DVD player, you may run into another problem. You will not be able to use the mouse to select conversation options because the video is "in the way". To fix this, in the [VIDEO] section of Tex.ini, change the text beside "MCIDISPLAY" to 0x0. It is normal for the video to disappear when the conversation options appear after the MCIDISPLAY info has been changed, this is not a problem. Note: In all cases, do not change the information to the left of the equal sign (=) and make sure that you do not erase the equal sign. Also, this has only been tested on a Creative Labs Encore 5x DVD drive. It might not work for all types of DVD drives.
I have poppy sound in VR rooms after I install the patch! How can I fix this?:
This is a problem that took me weeks to solve. I finally figured that one of the files that the patch was updating was modifying the sound somehow. The files are defualt.ini and default2.ini (I don't think default2 is important, however). Open both of these files up from your Overseer directory, (They should open in Notepad). Under the section "[Digi]" beside RSXDeviceType after installing the patch, it should say "directsound". This is your problem. Change "directsound" in both files to "wave". This should fix the poppy sound problem!
I have poppy sound (patched or not patched)! What can I do?:
First off, if you've installed the patch, try the above first. If that doesn't help. Try this: Go to "Start", "Programs", "Intel RSX 3D", "Configuration". This will open the RSX Config. Go to Advanced Settings and restore default to both settings here. If they are already on default, you may try to change these numbers. Try to find the best setting and once you have, leave it there. (Submitted by Chris Marsland).
I still have poppy sound! I've tried your other two solutions! Is there anything else I can try?:
Yes, as a matter of fact there is. Go to "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel". When you get there double click on "Multimedia". Under Playback select "Advanced Properties" . Go to the "Performance" tab and move "Hardware Acceleration" to "None". (Submitted by Mats Fredriksson).
My goodness! I still, have poppy sound! It's driving me crazy! Can you help me further?:
I sure can! Open up Windows Explorer and open the "Program Files" directory on your C: drive (or where DirectX was installed). Open the directory "Directx" then "Setup". Inside there should be a file called DXDaig.lnk. Open it. This will open the DirectX configuration. Select the "Sound" tab. You should now see a slider that says "Hardware Sound Acceleration Level". Move that down to "Basic Acceleration". Exit the program and run Overseer.
Overseer freezes when the cursor changes from the pointer to the crosshair! What can I do?:
You have two possibilities here, at least that I'm aware of. Both lead to negative side effects, however, so I'll let you choose.
1. Open up Windows Explorer and open the "Program Files" directory on your C: drive (or where DirectX was installed). Open the directory "Directx" then "Setup". Inside there should be a file called DXDaig.lnk. Open it. Go to the "Display" tab and click the button that reads "Disable" beside "AGP Support". There is one major side effect that I've noticed using this method. Upon exiting Overseer, you will get an "Illegal Operation" message and your colour will be off. Depending on your resolution, it may be off too. This can all be fixed by a simple restart (except for the resolution which you need to change through your desktop.) You will not be able to run Overseer more than once without restarting your computer!
2. Here's a way that gets you no error messages, but if you like 3D acceleration, then you should say bye-bye to it or try the above. Right click "My Computer" on your desktop. Select "Properties". Go to the "Performance" tab and select "Graphics...". Move the "Hardware Acceleration" slider down to "Basic Accelerator Functions". Hopefully this should fix your problem.
